Lost Souls: Found! Inspiring Stories About German Shepherd Dogs

Lost Souls: FOUND! Inspiring Stories about German Shepherd Dogs is a heartwarming, thought-provoking compilation of over 50 true stories which address the cruelty of animal neglect and abuse and the joy rescued dogs bring to their new homes. This book is a must-read for German Shepherd lovers and people who are considering adopting dogs. A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF PROCEEDS FROM EVERY SALE IS DONATED BACK TO GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG RESCUE GROUPS. Excerpt: I was approved as a bone-a-fide dog mom by my local rescue and, confident I would be taking home a particular female, I had painted a room pink for her and purchased doggy nail polish. Upon finally meeting my girl, the rescue director cautioned me about her extreme dominance and need for discipline, which was not my forte by any means. Still stubborn and hopeful, I walked her until she quickly proved our mismatch by dragging me across the yard. Begrudgingly I moved on to meet several less dominant dogs, and to my surprise the one turned out to be Jackson (now Beau), a male with striking hazel eyes, who adopted me the moment we met. The pink doggy room is now used for storage, the nail polish was given away, and Beau is an absolute dream companion. -Lisa Hall

Cracker!: The Best Dog in Vietnam

CRACKER IS ONE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY'S MOST VALUABLE WEAPONS:

a German shepherd trained to sniff out bombs, traps, and the enemy. The fate of entire platoons rests on her keen sense of smell. She's a Big Deal, and she likes it that way. Sometimes Cracker remembers when she was younger, and her previous owner would feed her hot dogs and let her sleep in his bed. That was nice, too.

Rick Hanski is headed to Vietnam. There, he's going to whip the world and prove to his family and his sergeant -- and everyone else who didn't think he was cut out for war -- wrong. But sometimes Rick can't help but wonder that maybe everyone else is right. Maybe he should have just stayed at home and worked in his dad's hardware store.

When Cracker is paired with Rick, she isn't so sure about this new owner. He's going to have to prove himself to her before she's going to prove herself to him. They need to be friends before they can be a team, and they have to be a team if they want to get home alive.

Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler. It's an utterly unique powerhouse of a book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira.

The author of Kira-Kira (2004) andWeedflower (2006) tells a stirring, realistic story of America's war in Vietnam, using the alternating viewpoints of an army dog named Cracker and her 17-year-old handler, Rick Hanski, who enlists to "whip the world" and avoid a routine job. From their training at a base in the U.S, complete with mean sergeant and close buddies, to their stalking the enemy, the heartfelt tale explores the close bond of the scout-dog team, relating how it detects booby traps and mines, finds the enemy, rescues POWs, and returns home to a heroes' welcome. Throughout the struggle, the dog and the teenager care for one another. There's no background on the conflict ("he didn't and couldn't understand what he was doing here in Vietnam"). Rather, the focus is on how Cracker uses her senses to help the team accomplish its goals, and on her physical bond with Rick, who understands Cracker's every movement.

K9 Cops: Police Dogs of the World

Dogs are not called ‘man’s best friend’ for nothing. Over the centuries, we have enjoyed a close connection with canines: they have provided invaluable help with hunting, tracking, guarding, haulage and rescue work, and have been affectionate and loyal companions without peer. In this fascinating book, Nigel Allsopp lifts the lid on the world of police dogs, examining the vital roles they play both in Australia and around the world. Despite the numerous high-tech devices now available to law-enforcement officials, ‘K9’s – as they’re known in the trade – remain an indispensable part of police work in a range of fields, notably terrorism and border protection. K9s may sometimes be sent into difficult and dangerous situations, but this is never done without care and concern, for at the heart of their role is the intimate and symbiotic relationship between dog and handler. K9 Cops explores the history, training and current use of police dogs, as well as considering what future dogs have in modern law enforcement. It also includes an A–Z of police canine units in 47 countries. For all police and military personnel, K9 Cops is an informative, must-read book. For the rest of us, it is an entertaining and heart- warming account that dog lovers the world over will enjoy.
"K-9 Cops: Police Dogs of the World" is a no-holds barred unflinching look of life on the beat with the world's police K-9 units. Australian Journalist and former police officer, Nigel Allsopp delivers a one of a kind first-hand account into the world of police canines and their handlers. He takes readers on an unprecedented journey around the world to explore how internationally renowned police departments employ highly trained and dedicated police K-9 units in the never-ending fight against crime and the sinister scourge of terrorism. Travel from the streets of Toronto, Canada, the bustling sites of London, England and New York City, to the tumultuous battlegrounds of Israel and the sands of Iraq. This book explores every aspect of life as a K-9 Officer, from unique training techniques, handler and canine selection, as well as harrowing first-hand accounts of real life police K-9 situations. This book is a must-have item for dog lovers and anyone interested in a career working with police dogs.
As a big fan of police dogs and their handlers, I've seen all the movies and watched every documentary on the subject. After reading this book, I have to say that this is one of the best works of literature that I've read documenting the reclusive world of police dogs. Mr. Allsopp has done an exemplary job in examining every detail of the police canine profession. I would recommend that everyone buy this book when they get a chance, its well worth the time to read it.
