I dont like dogs make bite work in the shows but dont make guard in real life. For me good character German Shepherd Dogs is very friendly with family and children but protective against strangers.

Currently I work as a part time field instructor for Paws with a Cause, a National Assistance dog program which provides Assistance dogs, Hearing ear dogs and Seizure response dogs to people in need.

Previously I worked as a Seeing Eye dog instructor, Pilot dog guide dog instructor and Military Police dog trainer/instructor for the U.S. Marines. I have trained and handled dogs overseas and throughout the Nation for over 31 years. Additionally I am an active Schutzhund trainer/competitor, having placed in the top five at regional and national events. I have trained dogs for the television series Law and Order and the major motion pictures, Body of Lies and Law Abiding Citizen.

From the most common problems, to the most extreme issues, I have actively dealt with them drawing upon my wealth of real and practical experience.

My goal with clients is to help them with the most practical, safe and effective program. I realized many years ago that the key to most problems is finding a solution that is effective and attainable for both dog and owner.

The training programs are usually conducted in your home or problem area. Each program is tailored to work with your dogs strength. I strive to teach very clear communication, the desire is to have a dog clearly understand the difference between right and wrong, I have found that vague or poorly communicated ideas generally leads to problems 

I believe in my methods and trust my experience is unmatched. I have been fortunate to have worked for some of the most respected and world renowned organizations in the United States, These programs are highly competitive and select their trainers based on desire and ability. I did not pay but was selected based on my merit.

In the summer of 2002, Steve established K9 Solutions.
Recently, Steve competed at the 2005 North American Schutzhund Championship and placed 4th as a handler/owner team along with placing 4th at the H.O.T. Championship. 
Steve is currently trialing two Schutzhund dogs, Aika a female German Shepherd, and Hasso, a male German Shepherd, under the guidance of Jim Hill, a 5 time world team member.

At vom Airmont, we selectively breed top German blood lines in order to produce puppies that are fit for family companionship, working ability, the show ring, agility, Search and Rescue, schutzhund, Police work, and Service Dog work. We perform extensive temperament testing on our puppies to ensure the proper placement of each puppy with each family. Before going to their new homes, all of our puppies have started crate training, been de-wormed, and have received their first shot and a thorough health check by a veterinarian.

Our puppies are dual registered with both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the United Schutzhund Clubs of America (USA).

We are a small kennel based out of Monroe, North Carolina. Our goal is to produce healthy, stable minded, solid structured family protectors and companions. That are strong, friendly, confident, obedient, have stable nerves and a passion to serve.

The puppies we produce are from European Working lines. They have DDR Czech structure with wide head, short muzzle, deep chested and have long straight backs.

Our adults are always alert and on guard, yet can still be taken into public places and can be handled by strangers without having any issues.

Our dogs are not kenneled. They have a 5 acre lot with access to a barn and large outdoor shelter. We also rotate the dogs from being in the pasture and running free around our home. These dogs have a over 10 acres to roam during the day and are cuddled up inside with us at night.

The Sugarloaf Shepherds kennel is owned and operated by us, Lance and Linda Lessler. We were living in Germantown, Maryland at the time we decided to establish our own kennel, and we needed a name for our kennel. Linda always comes up with the names in our family. We were looking out across the landscape from our bedroom window and her eyes fixated on the lone mountain that could be seen from our property, Sugarloaf Mountain. Linda suggested the name Sugarloaf Shepherds because the mountain was a very unusual one, and we wanted our kennel to be exceptional.

The solution: Linda and I retired from our careers at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Rockville, MD, and moved to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, where we custom-built a new home for Sugarloaf Shepherds. Although we hadn't had extensive experience breeding our shepherds, we had the next best thing. We invited Barbara to come live with us in our beautiful new 4-acre homestead in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. There, we have built our kennel facilities, including a 1-acre fenced-in area for the dogs. Between Barbara's dogs and ours, we now keep on the order of about ten adult dogs at any one time. We have already had four litters of puppies in our new location. All our dogs continue the Vantasia line that Barbara founded and which have consistently earned high praise and won awards at the various shows we have attended. Merlin has become a Champion in both the United Kennel Club and our two Whie GSD specialty clube, the White German Shepherd Dog Club International and the White German Shepherd Club of America.
